This Week with Grow for Life (21/4 - 27/4)

Welcome back to the weekly blog!

We hope to be able to share with you a little taster of each session that has happened this week gone by.

Tuesday

Our Herbs and Nature session this week started with a chat about chives (Allium schoenoprasum) - a very handy herb from the onion family with edible flowers that both brightens beds, and helps to keep pests at bay!

The group then sowed chillies, nasturtiums, and annual flowers for the Urban Garden to sell, as well as potting yellow and red marigolds for the Parks team to plant around Bath

After a tea break, the group took a peaceful walk through Royal Victoria Park, admiring the mature and imposing London planes (Platanus x hispanica) and the large-leaved lime trees (Tilia platyphyllos). Both of these species have been used to beautify parks and avenues since the 17th Century, which the latter also being the source of linden tea, a calming herbal drink known to promote sleep.

Wednesday

This Wednesday the group headed out to Saltford Primary School with one key focus: to dig up turf and remove small beech trees in order to create a spot for the school children to plant seedlings.

Hard work was rewarded with nice biscuits at the tea break, before the group pressed on to finish off the digging.

They also welcomed a volunteer from the Saturday gardening sessions to see our therapeutic work in action!

Thursday

It was another beautiful and busy Thursday Social Therapeutic Horticulture session at our Walled Garden this week.

The group harvested spinach, potted up tomatoes, sowed squash and courgettes, got weeding, and even managed to plant out a few sunflowers!

If you're interested in buying some tomatoes, and have a bit of tea and cake, do come along to our Open Days on the 16th and 17th of May. More information can be found here:
