Welcome to Grow for Life
We provide therapeutic gardening sessions for people affected by low confidence, anxiety, depression or isolation. These individuals are invited to join Grow for Life as horticultural trainees.
Trainees attend weekly gardening sessions led by friendly and experienced gardeners and mentors. Together they help to look after beautiful gardens in and around Bath. Trainees acquire horticultural skills in a fun, informal and encouraging environment, whilst having an opportunity for meaningful social interaction.
“You gave me confidence in myself…and helped get my life back on track”
Gareth*, Grow for Life TrainEE
The gardening sessions result in increased confidence and self-esteem, as well as having a positive impact on mental health and general wellbeing. The sessions also provide an opportunity to practice and improve social and communication skills.
Grow for Life addresses isolation by providing a safe and welcoming space to meet, connect and interact with others, whilst working as part of a team to complete gardening activities. The programme also has a significant role in restoring motivation, a sense of purpose and a feeling of belonging. In addition, trainees are given the opportunity to gain a Level 1 horticultural qualification where suitable.
“I’ve been really impressed by the impact Grow for Life has had on my patient by greatly boosting his self-esteem.
The practical aspects of gardening had a gentle therapeutic effect and the supportive team gave him the confidence to secure a job.”
Alex, local GP
Grow for Life sessions often act as a stepping stone from which trainees progress onto additional volunteering, work experience, study, paid work or other meaningful activity. Trainees progress into a range of sectors with some choosing to pursue horticultural opportunities whilst others pursue different areas of interest.
Where trainees are keen to secure more work-focused gardening experience or gardening work, Grow for Life supports them to find relevant and suitable opportunities.
